A Pumpkin Spice “Latte” that’s not so SCARY

If you’re like me or one of the other millions of FALL LOVERS on the planet than you probably have already started to get excited about the crisp air, the leaves on the trees starting to change colors, and the very best thing about fall —

PUMPKIN.

There are oodles of pumpkin-related recipes on the web just in time for fall including my favorite, the protein-filled pumpkin spice parfait.  In fact the only thing I may enjoy more about fall than pumpkin is the return of hot coffee to my morning routine.

Arguably the most famous of fall drinks is the “so well known it goes by it’s own trendy 3-letter nickname” — the PSL.

Starbucks’ PSL (that’s pumpkin spice latte for those of you not savvy to the java jargon of the largest coffeehouse company in the world) has been getting some negative press as of late for it’s less than healthy nutritional stats.  We’re not even going to get into the concerns of organic foodies (that’s someone else’s blog) that have spurred op-eds by chemists in TIME magazine….

But when you look at just the nutritional info it’s hard to justify shelling out $4 for this diet-busting drink.

Well, there’s an easy, cheaper, healthier way to make pumpkin spiced coffee at home.  Ready for the secret recipe?

  1. Put ground coffee into the coffee basket if you’re using a regular drip machine (or put it into the french press if you’re making pressed coffee)
  2. Add 1-2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice into the ground coffee and mix it together
  3. Brew coffee

That’s it.  No, really.  It’s that simple.

If you’re looking for something a little fancier (and more “latte”), then put a half cup of skim or unsweetened soy or almond milk into a coffee mug, stir in a teaspoon of pumpkin spice, and microwave for 15-20 seconds.  The milk will get frothy and you can pour the black coffee over top.

You can buy pumpkin pie spice at the grocery store for about $4 or you can make it using spices you may already have in your pantry.
